Kotu Megersa is a 55 year old with 4 children. He grew only rainy season crops as he had no other access to water. This meant he had to struggle to find sources of income during the dry season. iDE connected Kotu to an affordable treadle pump and taught him how to grow dry season vegetables.
This means he was able to grow all year round, and earn a higher income.
In just 2 years of owning his treadle pump, Kotu has been able cover school fees for all his children, improve his livestock quality and purchase fertilizers and pesticides. His family even has better access to potable water.
Kotu states “I used to exert too much labour and hard work to harvest during the rainy season in which the return had not been satisfactory and I felt I had no choice but to accept the subsistence way of life.”
Kotu now produces throughout the year and he is able to retain a portion of his cereal crops for household consumption. He covers his expenses through the sale of vegetables. “I am happy with the after sales service I receive from iDE and I plan to in the future increase my land holdings so I can grow even more.” He has already requested to purchase a second pump and hopes to join with his neighbours so that they can have better bargaining power at market.
