Gezahegne Gonfa – A Garden of Plenty
After purchasing a treadle pump, 55 year old Gezahegne Gonfa’s life changed. His vegetable garden became the major source of livelihood for his family of eight. He planted tomatoes, green peppers, potatoes, head cabbages and onions, all in one season. These are the kinds of crops that Gezahegne never thought were possible on his plot. He was able to sell half of his first harvest which brought in an additional income of $189. This income allowed him to purchase seeds and fertilizers, pay land tax, renovate his house and cover household basics such as school, clothing and fuel.
Gezahegne's wife, Zenebech is thrilled with how well her children eat. She happily explained "getting such nutritious food every day helps the children to do well in school." Farmers like Gezahegne have the potential to lift themselves out of poverty. All they need is the opportunity, which is made possible because of your donations
